A safe home for mothers and children in Kibera
An initiative by seven architecture students who visited the Child Destiny Foundation's day center in Kenya as part of an excursion organized by the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Innsbruck.
„Während unserer Zeit in Kibera, einem der größten Slums Afrikas, durften wir die Child Destiny Foundation, sowie Alex & Florence, die die Organisation auf kenianischer Seite leiten, kennenlernen. Wir konnten nicht nur viele positive Eindrücke von ihrer Arbeit mitnehmen, sondern sie erzählten uns auch von ihrem Herzenswunsch, ebenfalls für die Mütter von Kindern mit Behinderung etwas zu verändern. Noch während unserer Zeit in Kenia teilten sie ihre Idee des Safehouses mit uns und für uns war sofort klar, dass wir dabei helfen wollen.“

Vision
Our project sheltHER aims to acquire a plot of land in Kibera, Nairobi, and build a safehouse for mothers of children with disabilities. In addition to providing safe and temporary housing, the project will enable women to pursue employment while their children receive care from the Child Destiny Foundation (CDF).
Through cooperation with the CDF and the use of locally produced TwistBlocks from startsomewherethe project promotes ecological and social sustainability. sheltHER creates opportunities and strengthens the position of women and children by providing protection, care, and long-term stability. The project stands for inclusion, empowerment, and a path to a better future. The primary focus is on building the women’s safehouse to offer protection to vulnerable individuals. In an ideal scenario, we envision the women’s house and the other CDF centers (daycare & therapy center, mental health center) being located on a single plot of land, to keep everything compact in one place and make daily life easier for the children and mothers.

Kuchenstände am Technik Campus
Thanks to numerous cake donations, over €500 in donations were raised!
Market stalls and sales
The handmade scrunchies and rings have already been displayed at several markets! They are also available in Innsbruck and Vilshofen (see below) or, of course, available upon request!
Excursion party
To conclude the Nairobi excursion, a celebration was organized featuring a photo exhibition, presentations, as well as the sale of drinks, cakes, and lentil dhal with freshly prepared chapati.
Beverage sale
With the sale of "Nairobeer" at the Faculty of Architecture, small contributions are being collected for the greater cause! Recently, we also have Makava. Thanks to the support of the company through a generous discount!
Vorträge & Präsentationen
Durch einen Vortrag beim Rotary Club Vilshofen konnte eine großzügige Summe an Spenden erzielt werden! Auch an der Universität Innsbruck hat bereits eine Präsentation zum Weltfrauentag stattgefunden.
